Cobham Rugby

End of Season report from Director of Rugby Steve Pope

......and looking ahead to next season

Dear All

I wanted to take a moment and the opportunity to reflect on this (2016-17) season just passed, and also to say thank you to the many people that helped in making it such an enjoyable one. Then give a brief insight into the plans for next season and beyond ….

This season has been a very enjoyable one and I am pleased to say I feel we are moving forwards positively both on and off of the field after gaining promotion last year. To finish 6th in London 1 is not a bad return on all of our efforts, With a number of considerable improvements in availability across the senior teams 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and Vets along with another strong showing from our Under 21’s just missing out to Richmond in the semi-final by a point, with many of the returning students already making a solid contribution to the senior playing squad.

I would like to thank everyone that has represented the club this season across all of our teams, along with players, coaches, team managers, physios, first aiders, supporters and anyone who willingly volunteered. Also to my coaching & management team whom have been great and really play a key role in making things happen and the club a good place to be, they have all been really good value and I really do appreciate all your hard work and support. Chris Gibbons, Dan Walsh , Matt Hopper (Who we wish every success as he embarks on the next chapter of his playing career in France, Matt you’re one of life’s good guys and I do hope we get to work together again sometime in the future).  David Silver and his team for getting boys back on the pitch and giving first class medical support across the whole club. Chris Melton, Tommy (Cobham) Schofield all the work you boys put in to make it so easy for the players is very much appreciated.

We have enjoyed ourselves both on and off of the field this season and a huge amount of thanks has to go to everyone who have given their time to make this possible in regards both organisation and planning alongside the actual logistics and doing of everything, that needs doing around a busy sports club.

I’m sure to miss a number of people off of the list and hopefully by the time you read this we will have already spoken, but if I do miss anyone my apologies, and to all of you and the following a massive thank you from me personally for everything you have done this season.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead to the summer and then pre-season I just wanted out line our plans for training and friendly pre – season fixtures leading in to the first league matches on the 2nd September

General Touch Rugby: Runs every Wednesday evening (7.30- 9.00pm) throughout the year and all are welcome, it is very social and friendly all levels of ability are welcome.

From a senior perspective we will be having the whole of May off to re-charge the batteries. The senior playing squad sessions will resume in June with conditioned touch games and skills work as follows. We will also only be training Tuesday & Thursday in June and July with the exception of Saturday 1st July which will be a whole club touch day with afternoon BBQ and a presentation to all on the season ahead and an opportunity for current, new and returning players to meet mingle and mix while having a run around and hopefully a fun afternoon in the sunshine.

June

June sessions are not just going to be touch rugby and a run about! -  there will be lots of skills work, everything with ball in hand and games will be high tempo and aimed to focus on fitness and skills under pressure and fatigue. General touch on a Wednesday evening is where the more social players may be better suited to having a run around.
