The annual Value the Volunteers and VP's lunch on Saturday 20th Jan, saw over 100 members and guests sit down for an excellent two course lunch in the main clubroom and at which club Sponsors Hurley Partners, generously provided the wine for every table.
Our Director of Rugby, Steve Pope and 1st XV stalwart Doug Rodman did a short Q&A session to celebrate Doug's 175th cap for the club following his appearance in the Chichester game that afternoon.
President Lionel Frewin then welcomed our guests, who included, Chairman Gareth Webb and Secretary Nick Hales from Chichester RFC, Tyrone Lawless, Surrey’s Senior Competition Secretary, Darren Grapes of Grapes Design who did the interior design for our new Curve Sports Bar, and Pippa Dickson who together with her late husband Peter, were driving forces behind the original development of the Minis as well as stanch supporters of the club from the 1980's.
Lionel also made reference to the tragedy that had befallen club members Michael and Angelina Couling whose son Lawrence was found dead in his room at university last weekend. Lawrence was a gifted singer and guitar player and prop forward for the club from U14's through to U21's. A huge presence as well as a well liked team player, he will be sorely missed by all his contemporaries and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
A minutes silence was held before the game in his memory and the club stood as one, in support of his family.
Chairman Steve Heard did the formal welcome to all our sponsors and then thanked all the volunteers for their unstinting help and support which drives so many aspects of the club and appealed for others to stand forward and help take on some of the many responsibilities that are necessary to support an ever expanding and hugely successful club.
A number of gifts were presented as a small thank you for a number of hardworking volunteers.
Following the game, live music had been laid on in the Curve Sports Bar which was much enjoyed by all who stayed on after the game.
