On Saturday 23rd August, Cobham RFC proudly hosted the opening round of the Premiership Women’s Rugby Cup, as Harlequins Women faced off against Exeter Chiefs Women. The fixture marked an exciting start to the competition, offering professional squads the opportunity to blend emerging talent with seasoned players. In a high-scoring contest, Harlequins emerged victorious with a commanding 61–29 win.

The first half was tightly contested, with both sides showcasing flair and finding space to score some outstanding tries. But it was in the second half that Harlequins truly hit their stride, delivering a dazzling display of open rugby that sealed the result.
Before kick-off, Harlequins community coaches – led by Sam Davies – hosted an open training session, welcoming girls from seven different clubs to take part. The energy and enthusiasm on the pitch set the tone for a day that celebrated grassroots rugby at its finest.
For Cobham, the occasion was especially meaningful as three former players from the Girls section returned in different capacities. Ella Nigrelli, who began her rugby journey at Cobham in the Under 5s, played the full 80 minutes for Exeter following her summer move from Bristol Bears. Eleanor Hing also featured for Exeter, coming off the bench as a finisher. Meanwhile, Grace Crompton – now coaching Cobham’s Girls Under 18s and currently recovering from a shoulder injury – was on the sidelines cheering on her Harlequins teammates.
With a strong turnout from the local community, the day was a true celebration of the sport. Spectators were treated to top-tier rugby, and a few lucky coaches who had mentored the returning players even managed to capture the moment with a photo or two.
