Cobham RFC leads the way in accessibility with new inclusive spectator stand

Cobham Rugby Club has proudly unveiled a new fully accessible spectator stand, setting a powerful example for grassroots sport and reaffirming its commitment to inclusion, community, and innovation.

This initiative began with a simple but significant moment. Just over a year ago, former Cobham player Seb Carley, now a permanent wheelchair user following a swimming pool accident, attended a match with friends. While the camaraderie was strong, his view of the pitch was obstructed by fencing – a frustrating experience that highlighted a broader issue: the club’s facilities didn’t yet support all members equally.

Seb’s friend Joe Yorke raised the concern with Mags Davison, who rallied a team of dedicated club members including former Chairman Tony Balkwill, former President Lionel Frewin, Treasurer Jon Moxon, current Chairman Steve Heard and long-time member David Fraser – himself a wheelchair user since a car accident in 2000.

Together, this group embodied the spirit of Cobham RFC: proactive, compassionate, and community driven. While an initial idea for a “viewing platform” was considered, the club quickly rejected anything that might segregate disabled supporters. Instead, they envisioned a stand where wheelchair users could sit alongside friends and family, enjoying the match day experience together.

The result is a £40,000 purpose-built stand featuring step-free access, covered seating and unobstructed views – ideal for enjoying a pint, catching up with mates and cheering on the teams. It also connects directly to the clubhouse, with easy access to the lift and upstairs bar. Beyond match days, the stand will serve as a presentation platform for youth festivals and mini rugby events, reinforcing its value across all age groups.

Driving the project was Lionel Frewin, who not only designed the accessibility ramp and platform, but also oversaw the ordering and installation of the stand by Hi-Volt Sports Lighting & Facilities. Generous funding came from a mix of club and community sources, including the Braemar section, the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards, the York and Davison families, and a long list of member donations via the GivenGain platform. Additional funds are still being raised to complete the project.

Seb Carley said: “This stand will make such a difference – raised and covered viewing for anyone that needs it. It will enhance the match day experience for so many.”

David Fraser echoed the sentiment: “The inclusive nature of the stand will make such a difference to my experience at Cobham and encourage other 'less able' supporters to watch the teams. Cobham RFC continues to lead by example, proving that when a club puts people first, the results benefit everyone. This new stand is more than a structure – it’s a symbol of what Cobham stands for.”

The stand was officially opened on 8 November 2025, with David Fraser cutting the ribbon alongside many of the volunteers who made it happen. True to Cobham’s ethos, the build was a collective effort – from Groundsman Nick Humber and Facilities Manager Simon Harper to senior players who turned up to help install the structure. David Fraser also volunteered his time to ensure the ramp and stand would be suitable for all wheelchair users.

Billy Davison, Cobham’s Director of Rugby, summed up the club’s pride: “I am thrilled to be part of a rugby community that values every member and guest so highly. It will be amazing to provide spectators with accessibility challenges the chance to cheer on their team in a safe, dry and comfortable facility. Everyone is welcome and I am proud to be associated with this incredible new development.”
