Cobham Rugby City Lunch – songs from the Valleys!

A spike in the volume of passengers on South Western Railways services into Waterloo from Cobham on Friday 22 October was the precursor to the Covid delayed City Lunch, which took place at Smith and Wollensky’s on Covent Garden Riverside. It was the Club’s second visit since 2019 and once again we were not to be disappointed at this fabulous venue.

Over 160 members, sponsors and guests found themselves mingling in the downstairs bar for an hours libation to wet appetites for what was to come. Gin and tonics were in plentiful supply as were some wonderful beers, kindly gifted to the event by West Berkshire Brewery.

The venue’s speciality is steak and we were not to be disappointed by the offering on our plates, which was of the highest quality.

Johnny Gould returned as our incomparable MC who, after a few well-chosen words of welcome from our Chairman, Steve Heard, dealt with the fundraising auction in his usual exuberant and polished manner and then introduced our guest of honour and world-renowned international rugby referee, Nigel Owens.

By common consent, Nigel gave a highly amusing and sometimes deeply personal address which had the assembled company rolling in the aisles and who, to the delight of all, finished with a song in a voice that echoed his love of his Welsh heritage – simply wonderful!

Huge thanks both to the management and staff at Smith and Wollensky’s, to Steve Heard and Grey Unicorn who managed the event.

NB: NEXT YEARS LUNCH IS BOOKED AT THE SAME VENUE FOR FRIDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2022
