Cobham ease to victory over Deal and Betteshanger

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

Cobham played their final home pre-season friendly on Saturday (17 August) and scored nine tries in a convincing 57-7 victory over Deal and Betteshanger.

The sun was out and a small crowd was in attendance for both the Cobham match and to watch the international between Wales and England in the clubhouse.

Ryan Saunders Captained the team for the first time since being appointed Club Captain and led from the front by opening the scoring with the first try (5-0). Rory Penfold then chipped the ball behind the Deal defence and gathered to score, with the conversion from Tom Farrelly putting the home side 12-points ahead.

Deal got themselves back into the game with a converted try (12-7) before Cobham stretched their advantage just before half-time. Secnd row Harry Green expertly gathered a cross-field kick outwide and provided the supporting Nathan Spratt with a scoring pass. Farrelly converted to make it 19-7 at the break.

Both sides made changes at half-time, with Cobham utilising their strong bench that included former Club Captains Joe Goddard and Adrian Van Der Ploeg. Penfold opened the scoring in the second half with his second try of the afternoon; Farrelly adding the extras (26-7).

The next score came from the Bliss brothers; prop Luke made an instant impact after coming on by putting younger brother Max away for a score in the corner. Tom Bliss slotted the conversion from wide out (33-7).

Max Bliss soon had his second score, using his pace and fast feet to beat a number of defenders to touchdown in the corner (40-7). From a catch and drive, hooker Augy Clarke scored try number seven before Joe Goddard and Ali Porter both got their name on the scoresheet to make the final score 57-7 and complete a good afternoon's work for Cobham

Our thanks to Deal and Betteshanger for the match and all the best for the new season. Cobham will now be preparing for tour and the Den Hagg tournament in the Hague, before the opening league match of season on Saturday 7 September at home to Thurrock, when all Support will be hugely welcome.
