Cobham Boys represent Surrey U16s

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

Huge congratulations to Jared Avellini, Max Birtley, Panos Voulpiotis, Matthew Lovell, Connor O’Byrne, Jamie Yorke and Caleb Boddington, who all represented Surrey Under 16s against their Sussex counterparts on Sunday (5 January). Both Surrey teams (Met and Rural) won their respective matches, reversing last year’s results.

It was a tight first half in the Mets game, with Cobham’s Max Birtley and Caleb Boddington putting in fine defensive performances to keep Surrey in the game, despite trailing 12-7 at half-time. In the second half, the game was more forward dominated with Surrey winning a succession of penalties leading to, first, a penalty try and then in the last quarter a fine try from Cobham’s Panos Voulipanos off the back of a driving maul. This gave Surrey a deserved 24-12 victory.

In the Rurals match, Surrey got off to a strong start and an early lead, before Sussex came back into the game that set-up an exciting second half. Jared Avellini, Matt Lovell, Conor O’Byrne and Jamie Yorke all had good games and contributed to a strong team performance, culminating in a last minute try for Surrey and a 22-17 victory.

Both matches took place at Horsham RFC.
